3: Activity-Based Intervention and a Linked System

Application Activities
  1. Meet in groups, and discuss two different types of programmatic assessments (e.g., criterion-referenced or curriculum-based). Consider the usefulness of each assessment type and its pros and cons. Finally, create a parent-friendly resource that explains the assessments, addresses the usefulness of each, and includes pros and cons of each.

  2. Select two different assessment/evaluation instruments that fall under the following six broad types: screening instrument, norm-referenced assessment, curriculum-based assessment, formal family assessment, assessment designed for a particular developmental domain/content area, or assessment designed for a particular population or setting. Examine instruments that are often used in the agency, county, or state in which students work or will seek employment.

    (a) Obtain a copy of the assessment materials

    (b) administer each of the assessments (to the same or different children)

    (c) develop ways for including family members in the assessment process

    (d) construct a brief review (1 page) of each instrument
