13: Steps in the Right Direction
Student Activities
Consider two families that each came from war-torn countries to the United States. One family chooses to fully adopt mainstream American culture and ignore their previous culture, while the other family adopts very few elements, if any, of mainstream American culture. Why might two families make these two different decisions? What impact might each decision have on the family’s interactions with service providers?
Describe a way in which a service provider could make the family intervention process more culturally appropriate.
Imagine you meet with the family of a child who needs an educational or medical intervention plan. What are some of the preparations that you would make to support a culturally appropriate meeting with the family and approach to intervention?
