3: Developing Cross-Cultural Competence

Student Activities

Think about your own culture. What things do you and your family do or view differently than others you know? How important are these things in your life?

Consider a time when you learned something about another culture unintentionally. Where were you? What were you doing? What did you learn?

Imagine you work with a family who comes from a culture other than your own. What can you do to prepare yourself (and the family) to be able to work together successfully?

Observe other people’s methods of nonverbal communication (on your way to work, at the store, with friends and family). Do you notice differences between men and women, younger and older people, people from different cultures? What are some means of nonverbal communication that are typical for you?

Complete the cultural journey in Appendix A (on page 76f).
