8: Curriculum-Based Language Assessment

Application Activity

Divide students into three or four small groups. Using a transcript recorded in a kindergarten classroom, ask the students to use Blank, Rose, and Berlin’s framework (Figure 8.2 in the book) to evaluate the quality of this child’s responses.

Transcript Recorded in a Kindergarten Classroom

Child: Thomas is following me.
Teacher: And do you want him to stop following you?
Child: Yeah.
Teacher: Okay, so what can you say to Thomas?
Child: I can tell him, "Don't bother me."
Teacher: How do you think that would make Thomas feel?
Child: Not so good.
Teacher: Can you think of another way to let him know that you don't like it when he follows you?
Child: I dunno.
Teacher: You might say, "Thomas, I don't like it when you follow me."
Child: What if it doesn't work?
Teacher: Then we'll try to think of a different way.
