Application Activity

Divide the students into small groups. Ask each group to reflect on one of the children portrayed in the chapter vignettes for naturalistic, focused, performance, portfolio, dynamic, or curriculum-based language assessment. Ask the students to outline a multidimensional plan of assessment that includes the following:

  • The types of alternative assessment approaches that might be used

  • The types of tools that might be used

  • Who might be involved

  • Where the assessment might take place

  • How the results might be analyzed

Ask each group to provide rationales for all of its collaborative decisions.
