Chapter Objectives
Upon completion of this chapter, the reader will understand:
- that families can be involved in their child’s educational program as informants, recipients of information, and active participants in the design, implementation, and evaluation of the curriculum framework
- that it is important for teachers to know a family’s priorities for their child’s education and to incorporate the priorities in the planning for the child’s education
- strategies to use when interviewing families
- the importance of extending learning opportunities at home and how to encourage parents to incorporate learning activities into their child’s daily routine
- how to develop strategies to interact with and involve all family members, regardless of cultural orientation, in their child’s education regardless of their child’s level of ability
