Chapter Objectives
The reader will
- Understand the role of decoding instruction in the development of skilled reading and the dyslexic reader’s difficulty with decoding
- Know the research that supports explicit, systematic decoding and fluency instruction
- Learn key elements of decoding instruction, including phonemic awareness, letter recognition, soundsymbol correspondences, syllable types, syllable division patterns, and morphology, and structured procedures for introducing and practicing these elements
- Understand the importance of fluency and activities that develop the rate and prosody of reading
