Chapter Objectives

Upon completion of this chapter, the reader will:

  • be aware of the structure and function of bones,muscles,and nerves

  • understand how the different structures composing the musculoskeletal system work together to produce movement

  • learn the basic principles of the musculoskeletal physical exam

  • know some of the more common musculoskeletal and neuromuscular diseases of childhood and their treatments

  • recognize that the impairment caused by neuromuscular deformity can be lessened through the efforts of the health care team
