Student Activities
  1. Contact a local Muscular Dystrophy Association hospital-affiliated clinic where children are seen.
    • Ask what health care services are offered. What types of neuromuscular diseases are treated? What types of professionals make up the team, and what are their roles?
    • Discuss some of the physical and emotional challenges faced by the patients and families served by the clinic.
    • Discuss some of the therapeutic modalities and treatment strategies used to enhance functioning and maximize quality of life for some of the patient.
    • Ask what types of assistive devices are used. How has advancing technology enhanced care?

  1. Visit a pediatric orthopedic rehabilitation clinic.
    • In addition to pediatric orthopedic surgeons, what other types of professionals are involved in patient care? What is a pediatric rheumatologist, and how is this specialist involved in the clinic?
    • Compare and contrast some of the common problems seen in otherwise healthy children and those seen in children with disabilities (ask specifically what common problems are seen in children with cerebral palsy).
    • Discuss some of the treatment strategies and outcomes for some of the common problems discussed in 2b.
