Study Questions
  1. Identify the units used to measure the frequency and intensity of sound. What is the intensity level of a typical conversation and the frequency range in which most sounds of speech occur?

  2. Outline the components, along with their respective functions as part of the hearing system, of the peripheral auditory mechanism and the central auditory system.

  3. List 10 risk factors for hearing loss, and distinguish the genetic from the nongenetic factors.

  4. Name three types of hearing loss, the location of dysfunction/malfunction associated with each loss, terms used to describe the degree of hearing loss measured in decibels (dB), and terms used to describe degree of hearing loss accompanied by specific threshold levels of loss in the frequency region for speech.

  5. Discuss the differences between the positions of proponents of aural/oral intervention versus the position of the Deaf community. Including a description of the emphasis, and rationale of each intervention approach and factors that may impede a family’s objective examination of options, obstacles, and outcomes.

  6. Discuss considerations in the selection and utilization of amplification devices for children. What surgical intervention is used for children who are deaf and who do not benefit from an amplification device?
