  1. A preterm or premature infant is defined as an infant born before which week of gestation? In what percentage of pregnancies does prematurity occur? List some known causes of prematurity. What are the two most common causes or preterm delivery?

  2. Define low birth weight (LBW), very low birth weight (VLBW), and extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants. What is a micropreemie?

  3. What is a small-for-gestational age (SGA) infant? Are all SGA infants premature?

  4. Define asymmetric SGA and symmetric SGA. What are the prenatal or maternal risk factors that can lead to each?

  5. What is bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD)? What does it result from? What type of problems might you see in children affected by BPD?

  6. Accurate assessment of gestational age is very important for risk stratification, clinical treatment approaches, and predicting outcomes. Discuss various methods of calculating gestational age. What are the limitations of the various methods?
